Hey, everyone! I’ve had one class and a meeting with my advisor, and I’m getting the sense that this semester will be fairly doable as long as I keep my head and keep plugging away. It’s only about eighteen weeks. That alternates between being reassuring and terrifying. Only eighteen weeks to get three thesis chapters, intro and conclusion done (plus revision)! Only eighteen weeks to get in my remaining two classes, write that extra essay, and learn to play the piano! Only eighteen weeks between me and all those post-graduation to-dos! Only eighteen weeks until this extended pursuit of a degree is complete!

So. Yes. That is the state of me, largely. Don’t expect much brilliance or discussion-provoking posts for… another eighteen weeks.

I do, however, have art queued up for the next eighteen weeks! Including some silly cat drawings I did as a reward for finishing the request event.

Hey, guys! I’ve been surprisingly active blogwise the past few days, mostly because I’m making the final push to finish my first thesis chapter, and in between being diligent I panic and have to do something to take my mind of it. Such as working piecemeal on blog posts. Plus some friends visited over the weekend and one of them hadn’t seen my blog, so we took at look at it together and now I’m excited about blogging. Even though I shouldn’t be.

Thanks for the music recs, everyone! I am well on my way to constructing a great Halloween playlist! This will come in handy in the future.

Also over the weekend, while having little panics (in all seriousness I am feeling a lot better about it the more I write), I went ahead and read MCA Hogarth‘s novella “Family.” Which is delicious, especially with some Mozart and a cupcake. It is something like a cupcake itself.

Besides my enthusiasm for writing posts, the imminence of my demise/thesis chapter (and after that I go headlong into churning out term papers, hurray), and the charming story I read, I have a sketchpost for you!

Ladies and gentleplums, I write to you from a new notebook! My faithful Hawkeye, who has done yeomanlike service for some years now, suddenly developed a series of problems just as my senior year got underway. Buggy computer+senior thesis=no. So I find myself the surprised but pleased owner of Zooey, who is faster and cleverer and has THE MOST SATURATED SCREEN. I have never had to play with screen settings beyond the occasional brightness and contrast tweak, so I’m not quite sure what to do about this.

ANYWAY. That’s the biggest news around here. Oh, that and–the marigolds are blooming! I didn’t expect it, but the Baudelaires have produced two tiny flowers, and at least three more buds look set to open. I need to take photos soon, since one of you asked me to do that if they flowered. In general, of course, I’m pretty busy with school, so I’m not really in a position to do much creativity (I’m trying to keep up with some of y’all’s updates, though I’m not doing much commenting). In fact it may be that I’m stealing time from doing readings to write this post. Ahem.

It’s for good cause, though–a sketchpost!

Well, I’m about to get exponentially busier with school, so I can’t promise anything in terms of updating (or reading/commenting) for the foreseeable future. I’ll try to keep in touch.

On my last sketchpost, pooryorick asked if I had any photos of my cats. Well, of course I have photos of my cats!

They came from the Humane Society, and are clearly a mix of some kind. Possibly part Norwegian Forest Cat, though I’ll never know for sure. I’m not sure these photos properly convey just how large these cats are. They came to us as a pair, brothers who weren’t to be split up, and while I can see why in Whitey’s case (he’s… very needy), sometime I think Slims might have gotten along just as well without a brother who starts chewing on him every time someone so much as says his name. Though Slims grows fat and prosperous no matter what we do (believe it or not, he is on a strict diet, which has not reduced his bowling-ball physique one jot), so I guess it doesn’t make much difference.

In addition to all that, have a few drawings from way back earlier this year, which I’ve finally got scanned and formatted! I’m being a little miserly with the stuff I formatted earlier in the summer in the hope that I’ll be able to use it as an incentive against going completely AWOL on everyone yet again. I figure if I have material for a sketchpost most every week, that’ll keep me a little engaged by default. We’ll see how that goes.

The Saga of the Baudelaire Marigolds

As only a few of you know, I am growing marigolds in a pot. I’ve kept this on the downlow because I didn’t want to jinx them–I have a bad track record with plants (pause for Calvin the cactus, whose passing was so traumatic that I renounced plantlife for years). However, since they seem to be thriving in their own peculiar way, at least for now, I’ll tell you the strange story of the Baudelaire marigolds–Violet, Sunny, and Klaus.

I bought a grow-your-own kit (with a charmingly microscopic pot) on a whim in the dollar section at Target, because I was feeling daring and because marigolds are important to me these days. I watered the compost disc and planted five seeds, as per directions, without much hope of success. To my intense surprise three of them sprouted!

Here’s the first sprout–either Klaus or Violet, I’m not exactly sure which. You have no idea how excited I was to see something I had planted with my own hands sprout and not die. As you can see, I kept them in my window-sill, where they got plenty of sunlight in early spring. Keep this in mind, it will prove important later.
